Simon Vouet

Simon Vouet
1590-1649
Allegory of Wealth
c. 1640
Canvas
H 1.70 m; W 1.24 m
INV 8500

Vouet painted this clever allegory for a royal chateau, possibly the Château-Neuf of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, whence come the Louvre's Charity and Virtue. The subject related to temptation and a rejection of worldly goods, is resumed under its traditional title, Wealth. With generous forms of the figures, the subtle arabesque of drapery, and brilliant colour, the picture is at the highpoint of a lyrical and decorative style which Vouet developed after abandoning the Caravaggiesque style he learnt in Rome, and, when Louis XIII summoned him back to France in 1627, he imposed this new manner on the French school.
